St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa claimed the ‘Singer Trophy’ under 17 division 1 cricket tournament 2016 when they defeated Thurstan College by 141 runs in the final played today at Moors grounds.
The lads from Moratuwa entered the finals beating the defending champions, Ananda College in the semi-finals. Thurstan College qualified for the finals after 37 years when they triumphed over St. Peter’s College in their semi-finals.
Skipper Tharusha Fernando won the toss and elected to bat first on a placid surface. After losing the openers cheaply, experienced one-down batsman and Vice-captain, Nuwanidu Fernando clobbered a scintillating knock of 138 off 114 balls which included 17 fours and 6 sixes.

Number four batsman Praveen Cooray made a vital contribution of 39 runs from 79 deliveries while skipper Fernando chipped in with a crucial 58-ball 42 which included 3 fours and a six.
Nuwanidu and Praveen added 123 for the 2nd wicket while Nuwanidu and Tharusha constructed a 102-run partnership for the 3rd wicket as the Sebastianites posted 262 for the loss of 6 wickets from their 50 overs.
For the Thurstanites, fast-bowlers, Yeshan Wickramarachchi and Captain Nipun Lakshan grabbed 2 wickets apiece.
In chase of 263 runs to win, Thurstan were bowled out for 121 runs inside 43 overs. Nimesh Perera top-scored with a fine 40 runs for the Thustanites while for the winners, Vinuja Ranasinghe grabbed 3 wickets for 15 runs and leg-spinner Tharusha Fernando captured 2 wickets for 30.
