St. Sebastian’s College won the 30th annual limited-overs encounter when they defeated their arch-rivals Prince of Wales College by 79 runs on Sunday at Moratuwa.
Batting first, Sebs made 225 for 9 in their allocated 50 overs with a splendid knock of 66 runs in same number of deliveries by their star batsman, Avishka Fernando. Two valuable contributions from Kusal Lakthilina (30) and opener, Praveen Perera (29) helped the cause. Left-arm spinner Thilan Nimeshana was the pick of the bowlers for the Cambrians capturing 4 scalps for 33 runs from his 10 overs while Sandun Soysa claimed 3 scalps.
Cambrians in their chase were unable to cope up with the pressure and they were bowled out for only 146 runs. Thilan Nimeshana shined with the bat as well top-scoring with 35 runs while ‘Big Match’ centurion, Hasitha Lanka scored 30 runs. Shashika Fernando captured 4 wickets for the winners while left-arm spinner Pramesh Fernando and off-spinner Nimesh Bandara took 2 wickets apiece. The series tally now stands at Sebs 14, Cambrians 13, two no decisions and a Tie.
