St. Peter’s fall behind on 18-wicket day

Three matches in the Singer Schools’ U19 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 started today around the Island.

St. Peter’s College vs St. Aloysius College

After winning the toss, St. Aloysius opted to bowl first in the traditional encounter which commenced in Hambantota. Left-arm seamer Dinuka Lakmal and off-spinner Ravindu Sanjana was impressive with ball in hand as the Peterites were bowled out for a paltry 78 in 42.5 overs.

In reply, the lads from Galle were ahead in the game according the situation as the Peterite skipper Santhush Gunathilake took 3 scalps at the end of day one.

Richmond College vs Dharmapala College

Richmond College opted to bowl first in the delayed start group ‘C’ encounter which commenced at the in Galle International Stadium.

Off-spinner Sandun Mendis was the highlight of the day as he picked up 5 wickets as the Richmondites dominated the opening day when bad light stopped play.

Zahira College vs Lumbini College

Zahira College won the toss and decided to bat first in the group ‘D’ encounter which began today at Colts grounds. The decision went completely wrong as the lads from Maradana was crumbled for a disappointing 67 inside 32 overs.

The two left-arm spinners Amitha Dabare and Vimukthi Kulatunga came in handy for the Havelock boys as they ran through Zahira batting with terrific bowling spells.

In reply, Lumbini College lost wickets at regular intervals but at the same time posted 128 with the help of right-hander Kavin Peiris who made a fighting half-ton in a low scoring encounter.

The visitors coming in to bat again on the opening day lost two quick wickets at stumps.
