St. Peter’s College hammered the newcomers to the league, Maliyadeva College Kurunegala 82 points to nil in their 2019 Singer Schools Rugby League encounter played at the Maliyadeva College grounds in Kurunegala earlier this evening.

After two close encounters, the Bamba Brigade had an easy game while the newbies got another thumping for the third consecutive week. The Peterite magician Raveen ‘Kadiya’ Fernando opened up the scoring for the visitors in the third minute of play as he went past the Maliyadeva defense with ease. Deputy Skipper Sandesh De Mel took kicking duties today and slotted in an easy conversion. (MC 00 – 07 SPC)

Fernando continued be a devastating factor for the Peterites and he went over for his second as St. Peter’s stamped their authority at Kurunegala. Sandesh added the extras to gain some confidence in his kicking game. (MC 00 – 14 SPC)

Bamba Brigade went into overdrive with two quick tries from Stellon Eardley and Yashoda Mendis and De Mel converted both as the Peterites secured the bonus point within 19 minutes of play. (MC 00 – 28 SPC)

Peterite Rugby – A Goldern Era ahead?

The Peterites kept up their dominance and didn’t allow Maliyadeva College to settle into the game as full back Thenuka Nanayakkara went over for the 5th try. De Mel converted his fifth to make it a perfect 7-pointer. (MC 00 – 35 SPC)

In the dying stages of the first half Peterite scrum half Sathmina Perera found the white wash as the boys from Bamba went into the break with a healthy lead.

The second half commenced and the Peterites continued their try-fest as Nizran Nilar put his name on the score sheet with an excellent try while De Mel added two points to his match bag with another perfect kick. (MC 00 – 47 SPC)

The Peterites played a fast brand of rugby as their winger Shenol Silva went over for the 8th try as Thenuka Nanayakkara took kicking duties from De Mel and bisected the uprights to add the two points. (MC 00 – 54 SPC)

The Devans managed to hold off the Peterites for 10 minutes but they couldn’t stop Nanayakkara from crossing line near the hour mark as the Bamba Brigade emptied their bench. The hosts faced a setback when Thakshila Piyathissa was sin binned and three minutes later he was joined by his team mate I M P T Gunawardena in the naughty chair as the Peterites enjoyed the numerical advantage with Sathmina Perera going over for his second. De Mel resumed his kicking duties with a successful conversion. (MC 00 – 68 SPC)

  Broken whistles and muddy boots

Finally, Sandesh De Mel was rewarded for all his efforts and for his assists when he broke through the struggling Maliyadeva defense to score another try for St. Peter’s. (MC 00 – 75 SPC)

Shanel Ranasinghe managed to score the final try of the game when he went past the defensive line of Devans with ease and replacement fly half Suhail Fernando converted the try as the Peterite bench gained some valuable game time and won their second game of the season.
