St. Peter’s, Ananda, Trinity and Nalanda take honours on day 1

The ‘Singer Trophy’ U19 Division I cricket tournament is underway currently. Here’s a look into the matches which kicked off today.

St Peter’s College vs Isipathana College

The Peterites were in a demanding position at stumps on day 1 of this traditional encounter against Isipathana College at their home grounds. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first but they couldn’t put together any long partnerships to build up a formidable first innings total. Ayana Siriwardane top scored with 53 as Isipathana got cleaned up for 190 in 43.1 overs. Left arm orthodox bowler Miflal Ameen ended with top figures of 4 for 37 while Chathura Obeysekara took 3 for 53.

In reply, the Peterites looked good right from the word go. Opening batsman Anishka Perera batted till stumps and he stood unbeaten on 50. The home side were in a commanding position with 156 runs on the board for the loss of only 4 wickets. Manelkar De Silva top scored with a quick fire 54 while Skipper Lakshina Rodrigo scored 33 runs. Ayana Siriwardane bagged two wickets for the visitors.

St Mary’s College vs Nalanda College

St Mary’s were bowled out for just 126 runs by Nalanda College in this ‘Group A’ match at the Nalanda Grounds. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. The Nalanda bowlers took wickets at regular intervals which didn’t allow St Mary’s to settle down. However Mass Rahim was the lone fighter for the visitors with 78, which is more than half of their team total of 126. Suhanga Wijewardane and Kalana Perera bagged three wickets each for the home side.

In reply,the  Nalandians managed to post 260 for 4 at stumps on day 1. Dilhara Polgampola top scored with 81. Malinga Amarasinghe scored a valuable 60 while Lakshitha Rasanjana stood unbeaten on 49.

Ananda College vs Wesley College

Ananda College put up a brilliant batting performance on day 1 against Wesley College in their ‘Group B’ match at Wesley College grounds. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. Sahan Suraweera scored a brilliant 118 up the order and he was joined by Sri Lanka U19 cap Sammu Ashan who scored 106 runs. The top order was on fire for the Anandians as Dushan Hettige and Asel Sigera chipped in with half centuries. They declared their innings on 377 for 4 in just 60.5 overs.

In reply, the home side collapsed thanks to a brilliant bit of bowling by Ashan who bagged 5 wickets for 66 runs. Sakunthaka Liyanage scored a fighting knock of 52 and he got some support from Shamod Athulathmudali who chipped in with 33 runs. Wesley could not get anywhere near the first innings total of Ananda as they were bowled out for just 153 in 32.3 overs.

Trinity College vs Dharmaraja College

Skipper Shanogeeth Shanmuganathan and Vice-Captain Hasitha Boyagoda slammed superb centuries as Trinity College took major honours in their ‘Group A’ encounter against home-town rivals, Dharamaraja College, Kandy at Asgiriya.

Batting first, the hosts put up a staggering 422 for 6 declared in 70 overs. In reply, the Rajans were in all sorts of trouble as they were 66 for 6 with left-arm seamer Thisaru Dilshan picking up 5 wickets.
