St. Joseph’s College vs St. Peter’s College

The 91st Battle of the Saints between St. Joseph’s College and St. Peter’s College, played as a three-day encounter for the first time, ended in a draw today at the SSC Grounds.

This morning, St. Joseph’s College managed to add just 12 runs to their overnight total as Senuja Wekunagoda was dismissed by Joshua Sebastian in the third over of the day, falling two runs short of his fifty. The fourth-wicket stand ended at 91.

Yenula Dewthusa was then joined by Rishma Amarasinghe, and the duo added 64 runs for the fifth wicket. However, both set batters were removed by Sebastian within a span of 10 deliveries. Dewthusa top-scored for the Josephians with a fine 86 off 136 balls, including 8 boundaries, narrowly missing out on a well-deserved century.

St. Joseph’s eventually declared their first innings at 240 for 7 after batting 15.3 overs in the morning session, scoring 90 runs for the loss of 4 wickets—finishing just three runs behind St. Peter’s first-innings total.

Joshua Sebastian was the pick of the bowlers for St. Peter’s, finishing with figures of 4 for 80, while Lashmika Perera chipped in with 3 for 64.

St. Peter’s second innings began on a shaky note, with Maanasa Madubashana wreaking havoc as they lost four wickets for just 30 runs. Nathan David and U19 cap Jason Fernando steadied the innings with a 76-run stand. However, Madubashana struck again, removing David for a fighting half-century.

That wicket triggered another collapse as St. Joseph’s seized control, reducing St. Peter’s to 123 for 8. Madubashana completed a brilliant 5-wicket haul, while Fernando was bowled by Dewthusa for 45.

Enosh Peterson and Ethan Ransilige added a valuable 45 runs for the ninth wicket, but Demion De Silva and Nushan Perera wrapped things up as St. Peter’s were bowled out for 168, setting St. Joseph’s a target of 172 for victory.

With fewer than 20 overs left in the day, it was always going to be a steep task for the Josephians. Aveesha Samash gave them a brisk start, but once he departed for 20, the momentum slowed. At 70 for 2 in 13 overs, the umpires called off play, and the match ended in a draw, with St. Peter’s College retaining the prestigious Reverend Father Maurice Legoc Trophy for yet another year in Bambalapitiya.
