St. Joseph’s College regained the Rev. Fr. Peter Pillai Memorial Shield, beating St. Peter’s College by 5 wickets in their 49th annual Limited Overs Cricket Encounter played today (30th April) at SSC Grounds, Colombo.
St. Peter’s College opted to bat first after winning the toss, but it didn’t turn out to be a good decision as they were bowled out for just 156 runs in 41.5 overs.
The opening batter Nathen David played a lone fight for St. Peter’s College contributing with a half-century. The Peterite No. 4 batter Rusanda Gamage also chipped in with useful 32-run knock.
The wrist-spinner Avintha de Alwis was the star of the show for St. Joseph’s College as he picked up 3 wickets for 27 runs in his 8-over spell.
In reply, St. Joseph’s College got off to an excellent start in their run-chase thanks to their opening pair Sadeesh Jayawardena and Hirun Kapurubandara who put on a 74-run stand for the first wicket before the former left the field hurt after injuring himself while attempting to steal a quick single.
Kapurubandara went onto score a match winning half-century for St. Joseph’s College but unfortunately, he too had to go through a similar fate to Jayawardena as he left the field hurt after injuring himself while running between the wickets.
After the departure of the two set batters due to unfortunate incidents, St. Joseph’s College witnessed a chaotic period in the middle, losing 5 wickets for 48 runs.
But Hiran Jayasundara held his nerves and played a crucial hand with the bat to put his side over the line.
