The 48th Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletic Championship concluded today at the Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium Diyagama with a phenomenal 23 meet records smashed by junior athletes.
Overall Championship for girls was Janadipathi Balika Vidyala – Nawala with 62 points. Followed by Sumana Balika Vidyalaya – Rathnapura and Ave Maria Convent – Negombo obtaining second and third places. The boys overall championship was secured by St. Joseph’s College – Colombo 10, while Rahula College – Matara emerged runner up and Maristella College cuts close as second runner up.
P.A.D. Ruwansa Weerakkodi collected her third meet record in the 100m as she eclipsed the previous one set by two athletes at different times. She ran a 13.00 secs whereas the previous two athletes clocked in at 13.2 secs bringing the Champion for the Under 13 category to Janadipathi Balika Vidyalaya- Nawala, K. S. Edirisinghe also from Janadipathi was awarded the Best Junior 400m runner competing in the under 15 category. Her performance with a timing of 59.1 sec established a new meet record surpassing the previous one set in 2006.
400m event grabs the spotlight
The 400m event for boys Under 15 also saw a meet record as I.K.B. Abewardana from Ananda Sastralaya National School – Godagama breasted with a timing of 52.0 breaking the previous record of 52.29 secs set by E. M Supun Nimasha from Gurukula College – Kelaniya.
The boys Under 14 400m event was won by D. A. R. S. Jayasundara of Sir John Kotalawala Maha Vidyalaya – Kurunegala setting a meet record at 55.1 secs trashing the record previously held by N. Dulanjan Perera of Carey College – Colombo.
Vijtha Central College – Dickwella earned glory through the outstanding performance of S. H. Sadini Kaveesha in the girls under 15 Long Jump. With a distance of 5.47m, Kaveesha earned 884 points according to I.A.A.F. standards which was yet another meet record. She was awarded Best Junior Long Jumper and the Best Junior Athlete for the year 2017 – girls category.
H. H. M. Abeysekara was awarded the title of the Best Junior Athlete – 2017 boys for his astonishing performance in the Long Jump event with an achievement of 6.52m gaining 820 points. This meet record was established defeating the previous record of 6.34m set by K. W. C. Kumara from Richmond College Galle.
Struck by an injury, H.S. Malwanna still set a new meet record in the boys 100m event with a timing of 11.1 secs. Malwanna brought in 2 gold medals to his alma mater Mahinda College – Galle.
Team efforts breaks more records
An outstanding performance was showcased by the Under 15 boys relay team from Maristella College – Negombo as they took the relay championship in the boys category with a timing of 3:44.3 setting a new record in the 4 x 400m. They surpassed the previous record held by Maliyadeva College Kurunegala.
St. Joseph’s College – also established a record in the 4 x 100m relay for the Under 15 category. The previous record of 46.56 sec set in 2013 by Maristella College was smashed by the Joes crossing in 46.3secs.
The Under 12 boys of Trinity College – Kandy, set a record in the 4 x 100m event with an achievement of 54.7 sec previously held by Aligar National School – Eravur. The 4 x 100m event for boys under 14 also established a new meet record with an achievement of 47.8 secs by the Sir John Kotalawala Maha Vidyalaya – Kurunegala.
