SSC Open- ‘A’ Grade Tennis

The annual Tennis tournament organized by the Singhalese Sports Club more fondly known as the SSC Open is an ‘A’ grade ranking tournament that attracts the best players in the country. This year’s tournament begins on the 10th of June and is scheduled to conclude on the 22nd of June.

The 2014 SSC Open which is renowned for the quality of Tennis it exhibits is set to feature the likes of talented players such as current Sri Lankan Davis Cup player Dineshkanthan Thangarajah as well as Fed Cup players such as Amritha Muttiah, Nethmi Waduge and Medhira Samarasinghe. In addition to the above mentioned names the tournament will also play host to the class of former Davis Cup players such as Arjun Fernando, Rohan De Silva and Jayendra Wijesekera who are set to participate in the Men’s Doubles event.

This year’s tournament which has attracted over 500 entries is scheduled to feature the following events.

·         Boy’s Under 14 Singles

·         Boy’s Under 16 Singles

·         Boy’s Under 18 Singles

·         Girl’s Under 12 Singles

·         Girl’s Under 18 Singles

·         Men’s Open Doubles

·         Veteran’s Over 35 Doubles

·         Veteran’s Over 45 Doubles

·         Veteran’s Over 55 Doubles

·         Women’s Open Doubles

·         Mixed Doubles

·         Boy’s Under 14 Doubles

·         Boy’s Under 16 Doubles

·         Boy’s Under 18 Doubles

·         Girl’s Under 14 Doubles

·         Girl’s Under 16 Doubles

·         Girl’s Under 18 Doubles

 

The 2014 SSC Open which is offering a total of over one million rupees in prize money is sponsored by Hatton National Bank, Dimo, Etisalat and Perera and Sons while Head will serve as the official ball sponsor.

The Ppapare.com was able to speak to the tournament referee Dinusha Wijesuriya who mentioned the following. ‘This year’s tournament is guaranteed to produce Tennis of the finest quality which is sure to be a treat as far as tennis lovers are concerned’. ‘It is also a humbling experience to referee a tournament of such magnitude’ he reiterated.

The event is expected to be taken seriously as it is sure to  have an impact on the player’s individual rankings as far as the final rankings for the year are concerned.
