Sri Lanka’s young boxers begin a residential training camp

Sri Lanka’s young boxers have already started (on 18th April) a high-performance residential training camp in preparation for the much awaited international tournaments of ASBC Asian U22 and Youth Championships. The Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has organized the event at the newly inaugurated “state of the art” boxing ring at Katukurunda Police Training School and it will conclude on 9th of May 2025.

The training camp features the 25 member boxers who were selected to the national pool and 12 expert coaches and they will definitely put their maximum effort to secure glory for the motherland. Last year boxer Umayanga Mihiran took a Bronze by ending a 37 year medal drought and that victory definitely will inspire the youth boxers to put their maximum effort and go for a podium finish.

The ASBC Asian Under-22 and Youth Boxing Championships will take place in Colombo from 12th May to 23rd of May 2025 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. It is expected that more than 400 athletes from over 25 nations will participate in this much important sporting event.

The 25 member national contingent was selected from an initial 48 member squad following a national selection meet held in February 2025 and a series of competitive sparring sessions. The BASL Selection Committee, led by former Sri Lanka youth international F.H. Abdulla Ibunu, meticulously selected the best potential youth players where a medal hopes can be placed.

With more than 30 years of experience, the current Chairman of the BASL Coaching Commission and International boxing Association 3-star Coach, Amila Aravinda Tissera will definitely provide a valuable service to the young competitors as the head coach.

The President of BASL, Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara, who has done a remarkable job in uplifting the standard of local competitions and has overseen the successful implementation of a 1-star IBA Referee & Judge Course, to improve the standard of boxing officiating in the country.
