Sri Lankan Hockey ladies clinch 5th position in a nail-biting thriller

Sri Lankan Women’s Hockey outfit battled against Uzbekistan for the 5th place in the AHF Women’s Hockey tournament 2025, in Jakarta, Indonesia. The game went into the wire as both teams fought hard to win but were 3 all at the full time. Finally Sri Lankan ladies had the last laugh as they comfortably won by 3 -1 in the shoot-out.

Uzbek ladies came to the party in the 1st quarter by scoring the first goal of the tight encounter (0 – 1). During the last minutes of the 2nd half Sri Lankan lasses were in the hot water as Sri Lankan goalkeeper penalized for running into the body of the striking player. Then the Uzbeks grabbed the opportunity and scored their second (2 – 0) through the penalty shot. But Sri Lanka absorbed all the pressure and Shehani Madaragoda counterattacked with a goal through a penalty corner earned by the swift skills of Nipuni Fernando (2 – 1).

Sri Lanka successfully carried their momentum to the 3rd quarter as again Nipuni created a goal opportunity and Shehani managed to score her second (2 -2). But Uzbek ladies regrasp the lead as Sri Lanka gifted them a penalty corner (3 – 2). A vital 10 minutes of play went without scoring and at that stage Sri Lanka badly needed a score as they were inching towards a defeat. There Sri Lanka’s leading scorer Nipuni Fernando was up to the task and scored an amazing goal to equalize the game again (3 – 3).

During the 4th quarter both teams entered a fierce battle to find the winning goal and match referees had to issue several warnings. After a scoreless 4th quarter the game headed to a shoot-out.

The Sri Lankan goalkeeper made an excellent save in the initial shoot to give an early advantage as Shehani’s trusted stick gave another goal. During the rest of the shoot, Uzbek lasses scored only once due to the great defensive work by the Goalkeeper Geethika Ahangama. On the contrary Sri Lankan Ladies scored another two goals. Finally the anticlimax went in favour of Sri Lanka and 5th position of the competition was taken by the Lankan Lasses.
