Gunaratne, Dilhari help Sri Lanka trump South Africa in second T20I

Sri Lanka registered a convincing win over South Africa in the second Women’s T20I of the three-match series played today (30th March) at Potchefstroom in South Africa. With this win, Sri Lanka managed to level the series, 1-1.

Having won the toss, the South African skipper Nadine de Klerk opted to bat first and they managed to post 137 runs for 8 wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

Anneke Bosch and Marizanne Kapp top scored for the hosts with scores of 50 and 44 respectively. Achini Kulasuriya was Sri Lanka’s pick of the bowlers as she grabbed 2 wickets for 26 runs in her 4-over spell.

Sri Lanka faced early setback in the run-chase as they lost their skipper Chamari Athapaththu for just 6 runs in the fifth over of the innings. Sri Lanka continued to lose wickets at regular intervals as the experienced top order batters Harshitha Samarawickrama (12) and Hasini Perera (1) also fell for low scores.

However, the 18-year old Vishmi Gunaratne and Sri Lanka’s No. 5 batter Kavisha Dilhari turned the game in favor of the visitors and guided them to the victory with an unbeaten match-winning partnership of 76 runs for the 4th wicket.

Sri Lanka will take on South Africa in the third and final T20I on the 3rd April at East London.
