Sri Lanka Women’s Rugby team finish in 5th spot

The Sri Lanka Women’s sevens rugby team beat Thailand 24 points to 12 in the 5th and 6th place playoff to secure 5th spot in the 2nd leg of the Asia 7’s Women’s rugby Series in South Korea today.

The Sri Lanka Women were up against Thailand in the plate semifinals. It was evenly matched contest in the first few minutes but the Lankans broke through and started making inroads as the game progressed. For the Lankans, it was Ayesha Kaluarachchi who drew first blood with a converted try. They won a penalty inside the 10m, Ayesha took the quick tap pulled off the dummy and went over to score.

Just before the half time Thanuja Weerakkody extended the lead for the Sri Lanka Women’s. They were on the defense when they managed to turn over the ball and Thanuja used her long legs to good effect to go storming past the Thailand Defense.

Thailand came back strong in the second half with a converted try early on. It was their star player Rattanaporn Wittayaronnayut who used her speed and strength to open the scoring for her side. Sri Lankans bounced back soon after with two quick tries from Anusha Aththanayake and Dulani Pallikondage. The two tries sealed the game for the Lankans. Towards the end Thailand managed to get another try under their name but it was too little too late for them.

Early on, Sri Lankans had a tough outing against Kazakhstan in their cup quarter finals. The strong Kazakhstan scored 5 tries against the Lankan Women’s while the islanders only managed to score one try from Thanuja Weerakkody. The final score line stood at 27 points to 7 in favor of Kazakhstan.

Lady Tuskers were up against Singapore in the plate semifinals. It was evenly matched as both teams showed great intensity and physicality throughout the game. Lankans somehow managed to get the better of the Singaporeans and register a close win by just a 4-point margin. The try scorers for Sri Lanka were, Ayesha Kaluarachchi, Thanuja Weerakody and Theekshana Liyanage. The final score line stood at 19 points to 15 in favor of Sri Lanka.
