The President of the SLC, Mr. Shammi Silva, has stated that the ACC has given Sri Lanka the opportunity to host the ACC Asia Cup in June.
Silva mentioned that the news was confirmed to him by the new President of the ACC, Mr. Jay Shah.
The tournament was initially supposed to be played in September last year, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was announced that the tournament will be played in Pakistan. However, owing to the political tensions between Pakistan and India, it was understood that India would not travel to Pakistan. Hence, the Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to offer Sri Lanka the opportunity to host the series.
Therefore as stated by Mr. Shammi Silva, the tournament will now be held in Sri Lanka, with India also taking part in the tourney.
Pakistan has not hosted an Asia Cup since 2008. In 2016, the tournament was first played in the T20 format and it will be a 20-over affair this time round as well.
Sri Lanka last hosted an Asia Cup in 2010, and had the privilege to host thrice prior to that. They have also won the tournament thrice out of the four occasions that they hosted.
