Sri Lanka ended their campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on a positive note as they beat Netherlands by 83 runs in their final game of the tournament at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.

Netherlands Skipper Scott Edwards won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat first. Sri Lanka had made no changes to their playing XI from previous game.

Netherlands (Playing XI): Michael Levitt, Max ODowd, Vikramjit Singh, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Scott Edwards (w/c), Bas de Leede, Logan van Beek, Tim Pringle, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren, Vivian Kingma

Sri Lanka faced early setback, losing their opening batter Nissanka for a duck in the second ball of the match. Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis then rescued the innings, adding a 39-run stand for the second wicket.

Kusal and De Silva also stitched together another crucial partnership – 45 runs for the third wicket. The turbo boost came in the last 5 overs of the innings for Sri Lanka as they managed to send the bowlers on a leather hunt, adding 77 runs in the process.

Brilliant cameos from Asalanka (46), Mathews (30*) and Hasaranga (20*) in the latter part of the innings ensured Sri Lanka went past 200-run mark giving their bowlers a big score to defend.

In reply, Netherlands opening pair Levitt and ODowd came out firing with the bat, scoring 45 runs in 4.3 overs but Sri Lankan bowlers managed to drag things back taking 2 quick wickets in the powerplay.

Things continued to fall apart for Netherlands as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for just 118 runs.

Thushara was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka as he grabbed 3 wickets for 24 runs. Hasaranga and Pathirana also bowled superbly to scalp 2 wickets each for the islanders.
