Sri Lanka suffered their second consecutive defeat at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 as they lost to Bangladesh by 2 wickets in their second game of the tournament played at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and invited Sri Lanka to take the first lease of the wicket. Sri Lanka made one change to their playing XI bringing in Dhananjaya de Silva to replace Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis(w), Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Wanindu Hasaranga(c), Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Maheesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara, Matheesha Pathirana

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Tanzid Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Litton Das(w), Najmul Hossain Shanto(c), Towhid Hridoy, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan Sakib

Sri Lanka got off to a decent start as they managed to put on 53 runs for 2 wickets in the powerplay phase. The opening batter Nissanka was brilliant at the top of the order for the islanders as he smashed 47 runs off 28 balls with 7 fours and a six.

Sri Lanka were well placed after 8 overs having scored 64 runs for 2 wickets, but a major batting collapse occurred following the dismissal of Nissanka. They scored only 60 runs in the last 12 overs losing 7 wickets.

The 21-year old leg-spinner Rishad Hossain stole the show in the middle of phase of the innings claiming the scalps of Hasaranga, De Silva and Asalanka in two consecutive overs.

Mathews tried his best in the latter part of the innings but an excellent display of skills and control by the Bangladesh pacers restricted Sri Lanka to just 124/9 in the allotted 20 overs. Bangladesh bowlers didn’t bowl a single no-ball and conceded only two wides during their bowling essay.

Sri Lanka started off brilliantly with the ball as they picked up 3 wickets for 28 runs at the end of the powerplay phase. However, the wicket-keeper batter Das and Hridoy stabilized the innings adding 63-run stand for the 4th wicket.

Das batted sensibly while Hridoy came out with positive intent to put Bangladesh ahead. Hridoy took Hasaranga on for a hat-trick of sixes before the latter trapped him in front.

Hasaranga got Das too in his next over before Thushara picked up two wickets in two consecutive deliveries to put pressure back onto Bangladesh.

The experienced batter Mahmudullah was calm under pressure and held his nerves to get Bangladesh over the line. Thushara was outstanding with the ball for Sri Lanka in a losing cause as he grabbed 4 wickets for 18 runs in his 4-over spell.

Sri Lanka will meet Nepal in their third game of the tournament on the 12th June at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Florida.
