The 13th Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) Baseball tournament was held for the fourth consecutive day yesterday at the BOI Grounds, Koggala. The tournament kicked off on the 2nd of September with the group stage matches played in the Men’s categories.
The Men’s category was dominated by the Jayawardenapura University team; they beat the Sabaragamuwa University on their road to victory for their second consecutive title. Eleven Universities participate in the tournament from around the island.
Colombo, Moratuwa, Jayawardenapura, Sabaragamuwa, Wayamba, Rajarata, Peradeniya and Kelaniya qualified for the Quarterfinals Round.
The first of two semifinal matches were battled out between the Jayawardenapura and Colombo teams, while Sabaragamuwa and Peradeniya clashed in the second semifinal. In the 1st semifinal Jayawardenapura scraped past Colombo with a score line of 8-1. The 2nd semi final was a close game for both teams, however, Sabaragamuwa managed to book the place in final against Peradeniya with a score line of 15-12

The all-important final was set up between the Jayawardenapura and Sabaragamuwa Baseball teams. In a thrilling final clash, the champions were decided by a difference of a mere point. However, Jayawardenapura managed to win against Sabaragamuwa with a score of 14-13 and became the Men’s Baseball champions for the year 2019 while Peradeniya defeated Colombo to clinch 3rd place.
