A team of 7 Sri Lankan Athletes took wing to Thailand today to participate in the Asian qualification round of Youth Olympics which will be held from the 3rd to 5th July in Thailand.
The Youth Olympics will be held from 6th to 14th October in Buenos Aires, Argentina with the Athletes under 18 years of age eligible to participate. Asia has received a quota of 89 athletes. (57 boys and 32 girls)
Despite naming a squad of 8 athletes initially, the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) has decided to leave out Benedictine, Shalika Santhush, who ran superbly at the last IAAF World Youth championship earning him a spot in the Semifinal of the 200m. Santhush did not feature in most of the competitions this year owing to an injury he had suffered and had to undergo a fitness test on the 18th of last month. Santhush though fully recovered from the niggle that kept him out of competitions, failed to archieve the required timing and thus has been left out by the AASL.
