Japan annihilates Sri Lanka in Cup Quarters

Tournament favourites Japan demolished Sri Lanka by 70 points, keeping the Lankans scoreless in the cup quarterfinal of the Youth Olympic Asia …

The Sri Lanka Under 17 team that took flight to the Olympic Youth Games qualifier, which was the Under 17 Girls Asia Sevens Series, had an impressive start to their campaign winning their first game against Philippines 36-7.

The girls later lost to Hong Kong but managed to make it to the quarters. They lost out to tournament favourites Japan and later were pushed to the Bowl semifinal.

The Bowl semifinal saw Sri Lanka taking on Thailand that ended up in yet another one-sided battle with the Lankans losing 54-0. Sri Lanka lacked in their basic skills and were nowhere close to their first match performance.

A win for the team came in the final match of the day when they faced Iran in the 7th & 8th playoff. Sri Lanka who kicked off the proceedings saw them drawing first blood in the 3rd minute of play as Madushani Araliya touched down.

Another try by Chamodya Madumali and Sri Lanka had with them a consolation win to finish off the tournament.  Iran’s Maede Bahrami’s was their only scorer but it was not adequate to evade defeat.

Japan who defeated Sri Lanka in the semifinal were winners of the tournament and booked their spot in the Olympic Youth Games that will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina next year.

Coach Sudath Sampath wouldn’t be too happy with his team’s performance in the tournament but this surely will act as the foundation for the development of women’s rugby in the junior levels.
