West Indian bowling unit earned advantage of the Test on the third day of the second Test match against Sri Lanka at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua as Sri Lanka lost 5 wickets for just 114 runs during the day. Youngster Pathum Nissanka who guided Sri Lanka past 250 with the help of tailenders, was the only recognized batsman who remained in the middle at stumps.

Sri Lanka started their day on 136 for 3 with Dhananjaya de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal in the middle, trailing 218 runs behind West Indies’ first essay. Sri Lanka needed this experienced duo to make a big partnership today but the speedster Shannon Gabriel had other ideas.

Gabriel was bowling to a plan to the settled pair as he stuck to short balls in the morning session. Chandimal was almost dismissed in the first over of the day as he nicked one to third slip but put down by Rakheem Cornwall. Four overs later Gabriel earned his first wicket of the series for bending his back as Chandimal hooked one without control which ended at the hands of Hayden Walsh Jr.

From then on, Youngster Pathum Nissanka and De Silva built a promising partnership as both played positively taking the attack to West Indies main spinner, Cornwall. But due to a lapse in concentration by De Silva, he was judged LBW off the bowling of part-time spinner Jermaine Blackwood.

De Silva decided not to review his LBW decision despite having 3 reviews in hand and paid the price as the replays suggested that the ball would have missed the leg stump according to the ball-tracking technology. Needless to say, Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur was furious at (a) the umpire’s decision and (b) De Silva’s judgement.

De Silva was batting comfortably at that moment and these quick two blows in the morning sent Sri Lanka backwards which meant the youngster Pathum Nissanka and wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella had to shoulder the Sri Lanka innings.

The innings was disrupted in few instances due to rain as the play was limited to only 42.1 overs during the day. Players had to wait hours to get back into the field which didn’t help Sri Lanka’s cause.

Dickwella who scored another 90’s score last game, couldn’t succeed in this innings as he was caught behind for 20 off the bowling of former West Indian skipper Jason Holder. The only successful innings with the bat was played by young Nissanka who was batting on a different pitch compared to others’ dismissals.
