3-day defeat for Sri Lanka in 300th Test

Sri Lanka tour of India 2022

450

Sri Lanka lost 16 wickets on day 3 of the 1st Test on their tour of India to hand the hosts a comfortable win by an innings and 222 runs.

The day began in hopeful fashion for the visitors as Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka negotiated the 1st hour of play with minimal effort, seeing off Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin with a partnership of 58 runs for the 5th wicket.

A tight LBW decision went in India’s favour on review to dismiss Asalanka but Nissanka continued to look comfortable in the middle on his way to another half-century – his 6th 50+ score in 11 innings.

But things quickly turned India’s way thanks to some loose cricket from Sri Lanka’s lower- middle order. The hosts set the trap for Niroshan Dickwella, with two fielders out on the sweep and Sri Lanka’s gloveman obliged with a top edge straight down square leg’s throat before Suranga Lakmal played hoick off Jadeja to mid-off in the same over as Sri Lanka went from 161/4 to 164/7. Utterly abysmal, considering how well Nissanka was playing at the other end.

They were eventually bowled out for 174, losing their last 6 wickets for 13 runs, one short of Jadeja’s first innings score of 175.

Sri Lanka were asked to follow on and things started badly, Lahiru Thirimanne the first man to fall, once again to Ashwin, who has claimed his wicket 7 times in 12 innings.

Karunaratne, Mathews, Asalanka and De Silva all got starts but couldn’t stick around, on a pitch that wasn’t doing too much. Dickwella redeemed himself somewhat with a half-century, but it was all too little too late for the visitors, who barely avoided their heaviest defeat in tests (innings and 239 runs vs India in Kanpur, 2017).

Jadeja was the man of the moment, narrowly missing out on becoming the 1st man to make a 150+ score and get a 10-fer in a Test, finishing with figures of 5/41 and 4/46 to back his 175 with the bat.

The 2nd Test between the sides is set to commence on the 12th of March in Bangalore.
