Adam Zampa’s 3/18 and Josh Hazlewood’s 4/12 headlined as Australia’s 20-run win in the 1st T20I against Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
While the series hasn’t garnered too much attention in Australia, there’s been a little hype building around the mini-battle between the two leg-spinners Adam Zampa and Wanindu Hasaranga.
Hasaranga went for plenty in his 4 overs but picked up the crucial wickets of Aaron Finch, Glen Maxwell and Steve Smith, laying down the challenge to Zampa and the Aussie didn’t disappoint, picking up 3/18 in his quota of overs, with the wickets of Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka in the 11th over and then Hasaranga in the 15th.

But the star for the hosts turned out to be Josh Hazlewood, who finished with 4/12, a performance which never let the visitors get going. The quick made the early breakthrough, getting rid of Danushka Gunathilake in the 2nd over and then came back in the death to wrap things up.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka put on a brilliant performance with the ball to restrict Australia to 149, given the power-packed batting line-up the hosts possess.
The death bowling was particularly impressive, especially from Binura Fernando, whose 3rd over (the 18th of the innings), where he picked up both Marcus Stoinis and Mathew Wade, turned out to be the difference between a total in the range of 170-180 and 149, which Australia eventually ended up with.
Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, the batters just could not get going, missing out on the perfect opportunity to go 1-0 in the 5 match series.
