Sri Lanka, ranked 78th in the world, took on favourites Thailand who are ranked 41st in FIVB rankings. After a nail biting 4 sets Thailand came out on top 13-25, 25-21, 25-23 & 27-25.
Sri Lanka got off to a great start in the 1st set to take a 7-10 lead. There after they went on a 2-7 run to extend the lead to 9-17. There was no comeback for Thailand as they surrendered the set 13-25.
In the 2nd set the islanders had a 7-9 lead before Thailand came back to equalize at 15 all. At 18-17 Thailand scored 5 unanswered points to lead 23-17. Lankans tried to claw their way back but failed to lose the 2nd set 25-21.
For the 3rd time in the match Sri Lanka got off to a good start leading 1-5 early in the 3rd set. However, like in the 2nd set Thai lads equalized at 10 all and took a 20-16 lead. Sri Lanka scored the next four points to make it 20-20. There after both sides matches each other point for but Thailand managed to eke out a 25-23 win.

In a must win 4th set Sri Lanka were leading 14-9 before Thailand made it 14 all. Both sides fought closely and Sri Lanka had set point at 24-23. Unfortunately, Thailand once again showed their experience to win the 4th set and the match 27-25.
