The athletic extravaganza of the business community, the 33rd Mercantile Athletic championship was held at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakse stadium from the 19th to the 21st August with many of the finals and the awards ceremony taking place on the final day (Sunday 21st).
Over 1900 athletes from 48 companies which included a firm from India took part in the keenly fought championship where the athletic abilities of business professionals were put to test at 232 individual events and 42 team event.
From the outset of the game it was evident that the overall championship was going to be a hotly contested affair with two teams going neck to neck with each other for the Overall honors. MAS Holdings (PVT) LTD were victorious in the overall women’s category with 241points with Sri Lanka Telecom (PLC) emerged runners up with 218 points. In the Men’s section Sri Lanka telecom PLC was dominant and clinched the overall title with 202 points with MAS Holdings (PVT) LTD ending as the runner up with 168 points.
Sri Lanka Telecom (PLC) dominance in the Men’s category earned them the overall title with MAS Holdings (PVT) LTD finishing second best with an overall point’s tally of 409 whereas the winners had accumulated 420 points to be crowned as the 33rd Mercantile Athletic champions.
