Sri Lanka Table Tennis teams aims for victory in Kazakhstan

The Asian Cup Table Tennis Championship, which will be held to select the representatives of the Asian region for the Table Tennis World Championship in 2025, The tournament is held from the 7th to the 13th of this month at the Daulet Sports Complex in Beeline Arena, Kazakhstan.  

Men’s teams from 24 countries and women’s teams from 20 countries are going to participate in this tournament, which is being held for the 27th time. The tournament consists of women’s and men’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles and men’s and women’s teams. 

The Sri Lankan men’s and women’s teams representing this tournament left the country recently. The men’s team is led by Chameera Ginige and the women’s team is led by Lesanya Sethumdee, and Mrs. Sanduni Hiroshima Kavithilaka who is also with the team as the team’s manager and Lady Chaperon. 

The tournament is organized by the Kazakhstan Table Tennis Association under the supervision of the International Table Tennis Association and the Asian Table Tennis Association.

Chameera Ginige (Captain)

Crowned as the 2018 and 2022 national table tennis champion, Chameera Ginige entered the table tennis field from Ambalangoda Dharmashoka College and is currently representing Sri Jayawardenepura University. 

Chameera Ginige has showcased his remarkable talent on the international stage, winning a silver medal and three bronze medals at the South Asian Games in 2016 and 2019. A versatile and accomplished athlete, he has proudly represented Sri Lanka in several prestigious competitions, including the World Championship, Asian Championship, and Commonwealth Championships in 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2021. 

Imantha Udanjaya

Imantha Udanjaya who began his table tennis journey at Ambalangoda Dharmashoka College, now competes for the Sri Lanka Army team. In 2023, he captained the Southern Province team at the National Games. He secured fourth place in the World Army Games held in China in 2019 and participated in the Asian Table Tennis Championship in Doha, Qatar, in 2021. 

Chanul Dulsen

Chanul Dulsen currently represents the Old Sokains Table Tennis Club and is a player from Ambalangoda Dharmashoka Vidyalaya. He participated in the Asian Youth Table Tennis Championships in both 2018 and 2022, where he showcased his skills by winning three silver medals and one bronze medal at the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championships during the same years. 

Janith Batugedara 

Janith Batugedara, representing Royal College of Colombo, is the under-15 champion of the national junior table tennis tournament for both 2021 and 2023. He also represented Sri Lanka’s under-15 team at the 2023 South Asia Youth Table Tennis Championship in India, where he earned a silver medal and two bronze medals. Additionally, Janith won a gold medal in the under-19 team event and a bronze medal in the doubles event at this year’s South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship.

Lesanya Sethumdee ( Captain)

Lesanya Sethumdee Representing Ambalangoda Dharmashoka College, she was a member of the Sri Lankan team that participated in the 2023 and 2024 Asian Youth Table Tennis Championships. An accomplished player, she has earned two silver medals and four bronze medals at the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championships in 2022, 2023, and 2024. 

Maneesha Shalindi manisha

Maneesha Shalindi, representing Ambalangoda Dharmashoka Vidyalaya, is an emerging player who participated in the Asian Continental Stage of the World Table Tennis Tournament in 2023, as well as the Asian Table Tennis Championship in the same year. 

Shamalsha Dewmi Perera shamalsha

 

Shamalsha Devmi Perera, representing Gampaha Siri Kurusa Vidyalaya, won a silver medal and two bronze medals at the 2023 South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship. Additionally, she was selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship in 2023 

Mekayla Fernando  Menkala

Mekayla Fernando representing Elizabeth Moir International School in Colombo, she won a silver medal in the under-15 event at this year’s South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship. Additionally, she has earned a spot on the Sri Lanka under-15 team for the Asian Table Tennis Championship in China.
