Access Kings and EZY Wolves take major honours on day one

After an exciting 1st leg that concluded in Kandy, day one of the 2nd leg in the 2017 Sri Lanka super 7s kicked off at the picturesque Race Course International Stadium.

Just as in the 1st leg, the days play showcased some scintillating fast open rugby dished out by both the franchise and school teams.

The tournament as always was played in a carnival atmosphere with the rugby enthusiastic fans making their way to the venue to witness some top quality rugby. The fans who made their way were certainly not let down with the local superstars combining with foreign talent going against each other to set up their quarter final line ups.

The defending champions and winners in the 1st leg, Mobitel Eagles were pooled in Group ‘A’ along with the Walkers CML Vipers, EZY Wolves and Cargills Gladiators while group ‘B’ compromised the Leg one Runners up Softlogic Warriors, Access Kings, KBSL Dragons and the Etisalat Panthers.

Group A proved to be a tightly contested competition as the Mobitel Eagles didn’t have the best of days only managing to win just one of their round one games. Instead it was the EZY Wolves who went on to top their group with 2 wins under their belt.

Softlogic Warriors who reached the finals in last week’s 1st leg too did not have the best of days losing both of their first two games before creating an upset bringing down the Access Kings in their last game for the day. Despite the loss the Access Kings managed to end up table toppers in Group B’.

The Schools segment was played in the under 16 category which gave the future stars a chance to experience the limelight. As day one’s proceedings came to an end both Kingswood and St.Joseph’s remained unbeaten winning all 3 of their games played.

Kingswood College went on to register convincing wins against Wesley College (33-07), Science College (31-07) and St.Anthonys College (33-05) to secure pole position in their group. The boys from Darley road, St.Josephs college too came up with some eye catching performances defeating Isipathana (17-12), St.Peters (21-12) and Zahira (33-00) which earned them a top spot in group ‘B’. Kingswood College in displayed some tremendous 7’s rugby and looked a step above the rest of the teams. However they will face a stiff challenge from St.Josephs and even teams like St.Peters and Wesley who produced some good 7s skill throughout the day.

The winners in the 1st leg Science College had a disappointing day one as they lost all of their games in the group stage. It was also the same situation for Isipathana who failed to win any of their games as both teams finished at the bottom of their respective groups. Isipathana College will face a daunting task tomorrow as they will be facing the strong Kingswood outfit while Science College too will have their work cut out as they are lined up to face St.Josephs’.
