Sri Lanka stunned defending champions Singapore 36 – 30 in the semi-finals of the 10th Asian Netball Championships to book their spot in the all-important final to be held later today.

Sri Lanka went into the game as under-dogs after having lost to Malaysia earlier in the tournament but stepped up their game to defeat Singapore, who were favourites to defend their title at this year’s championships.

Sri Lanka got off to the perfect start winning the 1st quarter 10-7 and then clinching the 2nd quarter 11-7. Sri Lanka’s shooters were at the top of their game, ensuring that they made the most of the opportunities they received at the shooting circle. The defense, led by captain Gayani Dissanayake, were equally good as they neutralized the threat of the Singaporean shooters who had been dominant throughout the tournament so far.

Sri Lanka will credit their fantastic start for this upset win as the Singaporeans made a valiant comeback in the 3rd quarter, which they won 8-6. The Sri Lankans did not panic however holding their own to win the final quarter 9-8 and the match 36-30.

Upon departing for the tournament, Sri Lankan coach Deppthi Alwis and Captain Gayani Dissanayake had identified Malaysia and Singapore as they main competition and they have put themselves in the perfect position to reclaim lost glory after having beaten their arch nemesis Singapore to claim a spot in the Gold Medal match, where they will face Malaysia.

In the other semi-final, Hong Kong nearly pulled off another upset as they pushed Malaysia right to the edge but ultimately went on to lose 35-34.

Sri Lanka will not get a chance to atone for their earlier loss against Malaysia as they face them in the final which is scheduled to be held later in the day.
