ThePapare Basketball Championship (TPBC18), continued with its’ preliminary round matches in the boys’ category. St. Joseph`s College (SJC) took on D.S. Senanayake College (DSSC), while St. Sebastian`s College took on Maris Stella College (MSC) in ‘Group D’.
The first match was played between the hosts, SJC taking on DSSC. St. Joseph’s stepped onto the court with a win in the previous match, and it was the first match for DSSC in the tournament. It ended in a nail biting cracker, Joes clinching a 02-point win.
DSSC led the game in the maiden quarter 14-10, but Joes overtook them in the second quarter, 19-12. Joes enjoyed a three-point cushion coming into lemons with the score reading, 29-26. Both teams made their equal potion of mistakes, missing free-throws and giving away fouls.
After the ten-minute break, Joes went on to add 20 points in the third quarter, while the opposition replied with 17 points. The slight edge St. Joseph’s had was caught up in the final quarter, as DSSC outscored Joes 17-13.
The game was tied 60 all with seconds left. St. Joseph’s managed to draw a foul and step into the free-throw line, but failed to convert. It gave DSSC a breather for a few seconds, but the mid-range jumper from the home team sealed the game in style, Joes winning the match, 60-62.
Maris Stella College (MSC) vs St. Sebastian`s College (SSC)
Both MSC and SSC stepped onto the court looking for their maiden win in the tournament. MSC managed to outsmart their opposition convincingly to win 65-42. MSC led the game 19-02 in the first quarter, and into half time added another 14 points on to the score card. SSC only managed to score 08 points in the 1st two quarters. Half Time scores read, 34-08.
There was no difference in the remainder of the two quarters. MSC scored, 19 and 13 points for the third and fourth quarters respectively. Even though SSC did reach double figures in the next two quarters scoring 15 and 19 respectively, the early lead helped MSC record their maiden win in the tournament.
