Sri Lanka Rugby has temporarily suspended the appointment of referees for the schools’ rugby matches following the incidents that took place in the last three weeks.

In an official communiqué issued by Lasitha Gunaratne, President of Sri Lanka Rugby(SLR) to the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Society, the national body has ordered an immediate meeting with the respective stakeholders to see to a possible solution.

“This is to inform you that it has been brought to our notice by print and electronic media the recent misconduct incidents that happened during the Inter Schools Rugby League and Knock-out tournaments.”
“(We, the) SLR office bearers have requested to have a meeting with the office bearers of the SLSRFA on Wednesday 16th July 2019”
There were two incidents in three weeks pertaining to school boy rugby. The first was in the league final between St. Joseph’s and Royal while the other incident was last weekend in the match involving St. Peter’s and Isipathana.
Until a meeting is held and a possible solution is arrived at, the national body SLR has temporarily suspended the referees from blowing any schools rugby game.
“Please note that until a decision is made with regard to the above, no appointing of any referees is allowed for any of the upcoming inter-school rugby matches.”
With one more week of schools rugby action to be played in this calendar year, even ground needs to be reached amongst the national body, the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association and the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Society within the week if the games are to continue this weekend.
The Milo President’s trophy clash between St. Peter’s College and Wesley College is scheduled for this Saturday(20th) while the Chairman and Premier trophy finals are set to be worked off on Friday.
