Sri Lanka qualifies for Beach Volleyball World Championships

The Sri Lankan National men’s and women’s Beach Volleyball teams have qualified for the World Championships to be held in China from the 13th to the 18th of June.

After showcasing some outstanding performances during the Asian U21 Beach Volleyball Championships, Sri Lanka managed to secure their birth at the world event. The tournament took place in the city of Row in Thailand from the 3rd to the 8th of March.

Both men’s and women’s teams represented Sri Lanka as a total 23 men’s teams along with 19 women’s team took part in the tournament in Thailand.

Sri Lanka took on Vietnam in their first group encounter as they overcame their challenge by two sets to one to progress to the second round.

Despite going down to the might of the Chinese (14-21, 17-21) team in two straight sets, the Lankans bounced back against Kazakhstan in yet another straight set victory. At the conclusion of the men’s round, the Sri Lankan team stood at 6th among the 9 Asian nations which took part in the competition.

Ranga Prabhath, Ashen Rashmika, Tharindu Madushanka and Mihiranga Udayakumara were the members who took part in the Asian competition.

Noteworthy, the women’s team too came in 6th among the 9 nations to qualify for the tournament in Nanjing, China.

Hashini Malsha Priyamali, Tharaki Nelum Priyadarshani, Shehani Asanga and Ramesha Madushani Peiris were the representatives in the women’s draw.

The men’s team is coached by Mahesh Perera as the fairer sex is coached by K.A. Sajith Nandasiri.

However, Sri Lanka have been given the opportunity to participate in the world event with two teams of two in both the men’s and women’s draws respectively.
