Sri Lanka to open 2019 World Cup campaign in Cardiff

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will be played from May 30th to July 14th in England & Wales.

Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka all confirmed their place thanks to their ICC ODI rankings on the cut-off date of 30 September 2017. They were joined by the West Indies and Afghanistan, who booked their spot through the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in March this year.

The tournament will have 48 matches in total, with each team playing all other nine teams during a single group round-robin phase. The four top teams at the end of the league stage will face off in the two semi-finals at Old Trafford and Edgbaston, before the all-important final to be played at Lord’s.

In all, 11 venues, Lord’s, The Oval, Edgbaston, Old Trafford, Headingley, Trent Bridge, Southampton, Cardiff, Chester-le-Street, Taunton and Bristol will host the games across 46 days of competition.

Sri Lanka, the 1996 winners and 2007 and 2011 runners-up will commence their World Cup campaign on the 1st of June in Cardiff as they take on New Zealand, followed by Afghanistan at the same venue, three days later.

Sri Lanka will then move to Bristol to play their South-Asian counterparts, Pakistan and Bangladesh on 7th and 11th June respectively.

The islanders will only play at The Oval only against Australia on 15th June. The hosts, England will then take on Sri Lanka in Leeds on 21st June.

Sri Lanka will travel up north to Durham to take on South Africa and West Indies before they come back to Leeds to face-off India in their final group match.
