The Sri Lanka National Athletics calendar has officially been released with Local and International events neatly lined up, and we’ve got it all for you, right here.
The year 2022 is an extra special one for the Sri Lanka Athletics Association as they celebrate their centenary year. To kick off celebrations, the Association partnered with Nestomalt to host a Mini Marathon and Health Run which concluded successfully over the weekend.
A lot to look forward to this year with the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games coming up in Q3 and a lot of hopes still lie on the young up and coming stars of the track and field.
The second week of February will see the initial trials for the Asian Games which is set to take place in September in Hangzhou, China immediately followed by the first selection trials for the Asian Junior Championships.

8th – 10th of April will witness the 100th National Athletics Meet which will also serve as the final selections for the Asian Games. The month of May will bring in the Sri Lanka Junior National Athletics championship which will be the decisive trial to qualify for the South Asian Junior Championships.
June will be an important month for all athletes across board as a mandatory performance analysis test will be done on the National and Elite Athletic pools in the country. This will segway into the Fitness test ahead of the Commonwealth Games and July will bring the Birmingham games to life, with Athletics taking place in the first week of August.
September will take our qualifying athletes to China for the 19th Asian Games and a few more international events are in the works with the authorities to fill out the last couple of months of 2022.
At Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, Sri Lanka witnessed Yupun Abeykoon breaking barriers in the Men’s 100m event, qualifying for the event 25 years post the country’s last entry. Mathilda Karlsson and Milka De Silva, two proud women entered history as Sri Lanka’s first entries in Equestrian and Artistic Gymnastics at the Olympic Games, respectively. Matthew Abeysinghe and Niluka Karunaratne donned their 2nd and 3rd consecutive Olympic Jersey for Sri Lanka at the Tokyo Games.
