Sri Lanka cricket has selected the 15 member squad that will travel to India for the ICC Women’s World T20 championship, at a selection committee meeting held at the SLC headquarters recently.
The 2016 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 will be the fifth ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament and is scheduled to be held in India from 15 March to 3 April 2016, featuring 10 teams with matches contested in 8 cities. It will run simultaneously with the men’s tournament, also being held in India. Australia start the tournament as the defending champions.
Notable absentees from the squad include all-rounder Sripali Weerakkody and off spinner Madhuri Samuddhika while Eshani Lokusuriya, who was a surprise omission from the team that toured New Zealand in November last year, has been brought back. Young and upcoming all-rounders Hansima Karunaratne and Harshitha Madavi have been named in the national squad for the 1st time.
