Lanka Lions went down fighting against Atyrau & Toray Arrows Volleyball Clubs in the 2018 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship.
The Lions had successful four games, winning all four of the matches, and qualified for the quarter finals against Atyrau from Kazakhstan.
They defeated Yanchai from Hong Kong, Nakhon Ratchasima from Thailand and Canberra Heat from Australia in the group stage. Lions defeated Asia World from Myanmar to qualify for the quarter finals.

Lanka Lions v Atyrau
Atyrau from Kazakhstan defeated Lanka Lions 3-1 in an entertaining quarter final. It was the Lankans who came from six points down to win the 1st set 25-21.
However, the Kazakhs won the 2nd set 25-20 and the 3rd set 25-21 after an unrelenting pressure from the islanders.
In a must win 4th set fatigue caught up with the Lions, who had played two five set matches in the space of three days. They lost 25-17 relegating them to a 5th-8th place semi-final against the 2016/17 Japanese Volleyball League champions side Toray Arrows.

Toray Arrows got the better of the Lanka Lions defeating them 3-1. Toray Arrows won the 1st set 25-20 before the Lions fought back strongly to win the 2nd 19-25.
Even though Sri Lanka gave a good fight they were unable to overpower the Arrows losing 25-20 and 25-21 in the 3rd & 4th sets.
This defeat means that the Lanka Lions will have to play against Long Power from Chinese Taipei for the 7th place play-off.
Whatever the result, the Sri Lanka National Men’s Volleyball team playing as the Lanka Lions can be proud of their performances.
