Sri Lanka Junior Golf Championship to kick off in April

The press conference for the Sri Lanka junior golf championship was held last evening at the Royal Colombo Golf Club. The event was graced by the President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union and the managing director of the event Sponsor Mr Gihan Perera from Perera and Sons.

The Sri Lanka Junior Golf Championship was inaugurated 4 years ago with the hopes of getting the youth more interested in playing golf at a professional level. All the speakers for the evening expressed their opinions on how the youth are vital for the future of any sport and it is crucial to give them an opportunity to show off their skills to keep them interested.

The tournament will be held in the memory of Rukmini Kodagoda who was a national tennis and golf player and the participants will be playing for the Rukmini Kodagoda challenge trophy. Unlike previous years, this time it will not be a gender open tournament as the organizers have decided to separate the boys and girls categories as well as changing the tournament structure from a stroke play format to a match play format after the quarter-finals.

The tournament will be held from the 18th – 21st of April according to the following age categories with over 80 participants confirmed.

  •    15-18 years (Gold Division)
  •    12-14 years (Silver Division)
  •    10-11 years (Bronze Division)
  •    9 years and under (Copper Division)

As the tournament commences the key players to watch from the boy’s category will be Vinod Weerasinghe, Armand Flamer-Caldera Yannick Kumara, S. Duwarshan, K. Danushan and Nirekh and Khahn Tejwani. From the girl’s category, Taniya Balasuriya and Kayla Perera will be the crucial contenders to watch.
