Sri Lanka in pool C for Asian U23 Women’s Volleyball
Sri Lanka Women’s U23 team has been drawn in pool C alongside Chinese Taipei..
Japan and Thailand will compete alongside Sri Lanka in pool D; the tournament will take place from 1st May to 9th May. Japan & Thailand were placed 6th & 7th respectively in the 2015 championship. This will be the 1st time the Sri Lanka U23 Men’s team will be participating in the championship.
The draw was held at the Asian Volleyball Confederation at Dusit Princess Srinakarin Hotel, Thailand.
“With eight major tournaments being held by the AVC this year, I’m convinced this will help promote volleyball across the continent and in Thailand in particular. As the AVC Headquarters is located in Bangkok, we (TVA) are very happy and honoured to be part of the AVC. We will throw our strong support behind the governing body in order that they will gain more achievements in whatever campaign in the near future,” Somporn Chaibangyang, President of the Thailand Volleyball Association said.
At the 2015 championship Iran were crowned champions while South Korea and Chinese Taipei bagged 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
A total of 12 teams were drawn into four groups of three. Iran, Philippines and Pakistan were drawn in pool A but since then Philippines has withdrawn from the tournament. The top two of each group will qualify for the next round. Sri Lanka will need to win at least one game to make it to top 8.
The tournament will serve as the Asian qualifier for the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U23 World Championship to be held in Cairo, Egypt; the top two ranked teams will qualify for the World Championship.
