Sri Lanka defeats Hong Kong in straight sets

Sri Lanka thumped Hong Kong in straight sets to stay in contention for the 13th place at the 19th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship in Surabaya, Indonesia.

Prior to this match, Sri Lanka were fighting for a top 12 place finish before they were defeated 3-1 (25-17, 27-25, 19-25, 25-23) by Saudi Arabia in their final pool G match. In that match Deepthi Romesh scored a game high 26 points while Janitha Surath scored 13 points. Albakheet Ahmed and Alnajrani Omar scored 25 and 22 points respectively for Saudi Arabia.

Sri Lanka defeated Qatar in an enthralling 5-sets game in a pool G classification match at the 19th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball…

The loss meant Sri Lanka had to play for the 13th-16th places alongside Hong Kong, Iraq, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. Qatar, Vietnam, Pakistan and Thailand progressed to the 9th-12th place match-ups.

The loss against Saudi Arabia meant Sri Lanka had to play the 13th-16th place semi-final against Hong Kong. However, Hong Kong were no match for the islanders who defeated them 25-18, 25-13 & 25-17.

Deepthi Romesh top scored with 15 points and Gayan Madushanka scored 11 points for Sri Lanka. Alex Chi Wai scored 13 points for Hong Kong.

Sri Lanka will now face Iraq, who defeated Saudi Arabia 25-20, 25-19 & 25-17, for the 13th place play-off.
