Video gaming is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of sports – but along with digital entertainment becoming a larger part of the average persons life, video games have been making the move towards being recognized as a structured sport as well.
The competitive play of video games is called “e-Sports”, and those that take part in the sport are called “cyber-athletes”. Internationally, e-Sports tournaments give away millions in cash prizes for winners and top performing cyber-athletes make a living through sponsorships and prize winnings. This is the sport of the future.
Video games, whether it’s hardcore multiplayer or casual mobile games, have always been a part of the urban youths’ day to day life in Sri Lanka. In 2007, Gamer.LK (www.gamer.lk) was formed by like-minded gamers who wanted to foster the hobby and bring international standards to the local scene. The annual Sri Lanka Cyber Games e-Sports tournament was concieved in 2008, where it brought together the best cyber-athletes from around the country. 6 years later, the competitive e-Sports scene in Sri Lanka is 4 times its size and rivals tournaments in South Asia in size and quality.
Sri Lanka Cyber Games 2013, to be held from the 13th to the 15th December at the BMICH, is a Games Festival with the tagline “Celebrating Gaming Culture”. The event will feature the largest e-Sports Championship with regional qualifiers and many other festivities such as costume play, gaming hardware and software displays, mobile and tablet games, face painting, workshops and giveaways throughout the three days.
