The 5th Sri Lanka Army Relay Carnival concluded last evening, featuring many well-known National competitors on the track. The event was a one-day bash held yesterday (21st August 2019) at the Sugathadasa Stadium. 2 National Records were broken, in the Men’s 4x1500m and Women’s 4x200m relays, with 1 more New Meet Record in the Women’s Medley Relay.

The Men’s 4x 1500m team of the Gemunu Watch (GW) put on a stunning performance of 15:44:37 minutes on the clock, establishing a New National Record. Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) team trailed in second place, only seconds away with a timing of 15:44.41 minutes standing as constant competitors to the record-breaking winners. Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) concluded the race in third place, clocking a time of 16:02.69 minutes.
In the Men’s relays SLEME stood as a forerunner, registering the best timing (3:14.98) in the 4x400m heats and emerging first in the 4x800m relay at 7:27.40. Similarly, Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) emerge winners of the Men’s Medley relay event clocking 1:52.72 minutes, while the 4x100m sprint was won by the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) at 40.94 seconds.
3 National Records for Sugandi, Vidusha and Nimali
The 5(V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) dominated the women’s forces, securing the Golds in 4x200m, 4x800m and Medley Relays. While 4(V) SLAWC dominated the long distance 4x1500m relay with a performance of 20:28.74 minutes.
Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (5V SLAWC) snatch the Sri Lankan Record with a time of 1:37.87 minutes in the 4 x 200m event. The Support Arm Sri Lanka Signals Corps (SLSC) finished the race with Silver, clocking a time of 1:43.77 minutes while 2(V) SLAWC finished in third place with a time of 1:44.01mins.
The 5V SLAWC regiment holds another title renewing the Meet Record in the Medley Relay with a strong finish at 2:10.75 minutes. Stiff competition was among the Second and Third places held by the SLSC and 2(V) SLAWC respectively. While SLSC clocked a time of 2:21.04, 2(V) SLAWC finished less than a second short at 2:22.10 minutes.
The Sri Lanka Army Relay Carnival 2019 featured some of Sri Lanka’s top athletes in Himasha Eshan, Dilishi Kumarasinghe, Nimali Liyanarachchi and Aruna Darshana who will also be in the spotlight at the Sri Lanka Army Athletic Championships to be held next week (26th to the 28th August).
