South Africa thrashed defending champions Sri Lanka by 7 wickets in the final of the Red Bull Campus Cricket World finals played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium today.
South African skipper Wihan Lubbe won the toss and sent the hosts in to bat, before his bowlers stepped up to reduce them to 59/5 at the end of the 10th over.
Man of the match from semifinal number two Chamika Karunaratne made a gritty 29 again, but the Sri Lankans eventually folded up for 121 all out in the 19th over of their innings with Julian Soutter picking up 3/16 for the visitors.
Skipper Wihan Lubbe fell early in the run chase but the hero from yesterday’s semifinal Janemann Malan rebuilt the innings in quick time along with number three batsman Marques Ackerman who had failed to deliver so far in the tournament.
Ackerman fell for 23 but Malan carried his bat through once again making an unbeaten 64* as South Africa reached the target in the 16th over to secure the title for South Africa.
