The Ministry of Sports has awarded financial sponsorship of Rs. 1 million each for the six Sri Lankan athletes who will be participating in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The Ministry also distributed cash awards totaling Rs. 128.75 million to athletes and coaches who won medals and placed in the top eight positions in the last Asian and Paralympic Games held in China.
Young sprinter Tharushi Karunaratne was the highest rewarded athlete of the day, receiving Rs. 15 million for her Asian Games Gold Medal along with an additional Rs. 2.5 million for her relay medal.
Participating at the event, Minister Harin Fernando emphasized the significance of encouraging athletes even amidst the country’s financial crisis. He expressed his commitment to promoting sports and highlighted the importance of discipline in representing Sri Lanka
