Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has initiated a Schools Cricket Development project in the Northern Provinces with the purpose of promoting cricket in schools which don’t play the sport.
The first program of the project commenced today (15th February) at the Kilinochchi Sports Complex. Under the program, sports equipment were distributed to Kilinochchi District Skills Development Hall by the Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage.

47 schools which don’t play cricket in Northern Province will get the sports equipment under this program.
Speaking at the event, the Minister Gamager said that the main objective of this project is to involve school children in rural areas to play cricket, and that sports can be used to promote coexistence. Therefore, the Minister also stated that it was decided to start this project in the Northern Province.
The School Cricket Development Project is to be implemented with the aim of building a foundation to create a strong national team and develop cricket in a positive manner through identifying human resources. The government has allocated Rs. 1500 million in the 2025 Budget for this project.

The Kilinochchi District Secretary, the Director of Local Government, the Northern Provincial Sports Director, and principals and teachers representing 47 schools were present at this event.
