Southern Province registered their second consecutive victory in the SLC Super 19 Provincial Tournament 2016 when they defeated Eastern Province by 155 runs at Moors grounds on Friday.

Earlier in the tournament, Southern Province stunned North Central Province. In the other two concluded games on Friday, Western Province North and North Western Province recorded first-innings victories while Avishka Fernando blasted a terrific century for Western Province South against Central Province.

Southern Province vs Eastern Province

Dilum Sudeera’s 8-wicket match bag helped Southern Province on day two as Eastern Province fell short by 166 runs chasing 285 runs to victory.

The Easterners resumed day two on 103 for 6 but they could add only 24 runs before being bowled out for 127. Lasith Crosspulle top-scored with 46. The Southerners racked up 197 for 6 in their second innings before declaring their innings on Friday afternoon. Kaveesh Dilranga and Kavindu Ediriweera made contributions of 42 and 36 respectively.

Eastern Province batting faltered against the spin of Dilum Sudeera and Hareen Buddhila as they shared 7 wickets to bundle their opponents to only 118 runs. Sasindu Diwankara top-scored with 38 for the losing team.

Southern – 214 all out in 52.4 overs: Navindu Nirmal 47*, Chathura Milan 63, Kaveesh Dilranga 25, Dhananjaya Lakshan 25, Hareen Buddhila Weerasinghe 22, Naveen Gunawardene 4/89, M Rasfas 2/59.

Western Province North vs Northern Province

Skipper S. Jeni Fleming’s gritty 76 helped Northern Province force a draw against Western Province North at Thurstan grounds.

After being bowled out for 146 in the first session, Northern Province were forced to follow-on but they retaliated superbly in the second innings. Left-arm spinner Himath Jayaweera from Bandaranayake College, Gampaha captured 9 wickets in the match for Western Province North but it was Jeni Fleming and Isipathana College all-rounder Ayana Siriwardene who saved the day for Northerners.

After accumulating 253 runs in the second innings, Northern Province set a target of 94 for the Westerners but they managed only 51 for the loss of 5 wickets in 7 overs. Earlier on day one, St. Joseph’s College batsman Jehan Daniel slammed an excellent century.

North Western Province vs Uva Province

North Western Province fell short of 3 wickets to complete an outright victory over Uva Province as the game in a draw at MCA grounds.

The Uva boys were 127 for 6 overnight and they managed to get to only 167 before being all-out. The North Westerners in reply made a sterling reply of 182 for 5 in 35 overs setting a target of 269 to win for Uva Province. Keshan Wanniarachchi and Heshan Danushka made half-centuries for the team from North Western Province.

In chasing 269 runs to win, Uva were saved by their captain Avindu Theekshana who made a match-saving 121-ball 57 to force a draw. Left-arm spinner Damitha Silva picked up 3 wickets. On day one, Nipun Dhananjaya and Wanitha Wanninayake made excellent half-centuries.

Western Province South vs Central Province

Sri Lanka U19 representative and Western Province South captain Avishka Fernando made a fabulous unbeaten knock of 153 from 149 balls to take control of their match against Central Province after first day’s play at Surrey Village grounds in Maggona.

The Central Province batting lineup were after being sent into bat were rattled for just 140 runs. Gihan Witharana top-scored with 28 while the Cambrian duo, Savindu Peiris and Dilesh Nanayakkara bagged 2 wickets apiece.

Western Province South in reply were 238 for 1 at stumps with Avishka Fernando and his partner Kamil Mishara unbeaten on 153 and 46 respectively. They have successfully added 183 runs so far for the second wicket.

The match will be continued tomorrow (30th April).
