South-West Monsoon Regatta 2017

The annul South-West Monsoon Regatta organised by the Colombo Rowing Club concluded successfully on Saturday (15th of July) at the same venue. The Regatta featured a number of schools and university crews alongside the crew from the Colombo Rowing Club. The regatta featured a total of seven events on the basis of heats and the final winners were chosen on the basis of best timings.

Here’s a look at what happened,

The ladies’ sculls were won by Chethana Gallage of University of Colombo as she recorded a timing of 4 minutes and 48 seconds. Arjun Wickramanayke of S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia won the wardrop sculls as he ended the race with the clock on 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

The highlights of the evening were the centenary oar coxless fours race. The centenary oar race was started in commemoration of 100 years of service by the Colombo Rowing Club in 1964 (1864-1964). The race was held in as an open category event.

Colombo Rowing Club won the centenary oar coxless fours race with a timing of 3 minutes and 25 seconds and the crew comprised Ruwen Weerasinghe, Suhith Alexender, Sajeev De silva, Shehan Muthugala and Kaveen Rajapakse.

Ashivini Subasinghe and Anelka Karunarathne of Ladies’College won the ladies double sculls by recording a timing of 3 minutes and 38 seconds. Vibhawa Premarathne and Abdulla Hassan of Royal College registered victory in RCYC men’s pair event with a timing of 3 minutes and 47 seconds. Going into the men’s double sculls, Dharath Senanayake and Arjun Wickramanayke of S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia won this by recording a timing of 3 minutes and 38seconds.  

The ladies’ open fours event was won by Bishops College with a timing of 4 minutes and 18 seconds. The crew comprised Anushka Weerakoon, Akansha Hulangamuwa, Anagi Fernando, Thaveesha Attanayake and Anya Wickramanayake.
