Sri Lanka U23s defeated the Maldives Men’s team today, 5th December, in a group stage game between the two nations at Kirtipur as part of the South Asian Games.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper, Charith Asalanka decided to take first lease of the crease. The Sri Lankan openers were sent back to the hut early as Sri Lanka fell to 29 for 2 in 4.1 overs.

Thereafter, it was a fascinating display of batting by the young and exciting Kamindu Mendis who struck a 54-ball hundred. Mendis’ stroke filled innings saw 10 boundaries and 3 sixes in it as he ended unbeaten on 102 runs.
Ibrahim Rizan, Azyan Farhath, Mohamed Mahfooz, Leem Shafeeg all bagged a wicket each for the Maldives team.

A couple of quick knocks from Ashen Bandara (26*) and Sammu Ashan (22) down the order was the icing on the cake as Sri Lanka ended on192 runs for the loss of 4 wickets at the end of their quota of overs.
In reply, Maldives could only manage 94 runs, losing 9 wickets at the end of 20 overs. Mohamed Rishwan’s 29 runs were the most with the bat for Maldives while the next best was the 12 runs scored by Mohammed Azzam.

Nishan Peiris who was brilliant with his right-arm off-spin walked back with exceptional figures of 2 for 9 to top the bowling charts. Seamers Kavishka Anjula and Asitha Fernando too bagged 2 wickets each.
Sri Lanka recorded a thumping 98-run victory to propel themselves to the top of the table.
