South Africa punished for ball tampering

South Africa found themselves in a spot of bother on Friday when they were punished for ball tampering on day three of the second Test against Pakistan in Dubai.

The umpires caught Faf du Plessis rubbing the rough side of the ball on the zipper of his trouser pocket, and promptly called for the ball to be changed. They also awarded Pakistan five penalty runs.

“As per 42.1 of the ICC playing conditions, the umpires replaced the ball and fined South Africa team five penalty runs for ball tampering,” an ICC spokesperson said shortly afterwards.

It remains to be seen what further action will be taken by the match referee, David Boon.
