The first Sri Lanka University Games, popularly known as SLUG ,was held from the 16th to the 24th of March 1980 at the University of Peradeniya.
Since then Sri Lankan universities have continued organizing this major event once in three years.The latest edition of SLUG has commenced this year and the University of Wayamba will be the host of SLUG 2016. 14 universities from all over the island will compete against each other this year.
Hockey being quite a popular game in the country, is considered an important part of SLUG. Hockey matches of the University Games will commence on the 12th of August at the University of Peradeniya. University of Moratuwa is participating as the defending champions in the Mens category while the University of Peradeniya is the defending champions in the womens category.
11 teams will compete in the mens category for the championship in 4 groups.

Group stage matches will be held on the 12th of August and quarter finals on the following day. Semi finals and the big final will be held on the 14th of August.
