SLSRFA requests to Referees to re-think move

The Sri Lanka Schools’ Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) has requested the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Referees’ (SLSRFR) to rethink their decision about abstain from officiating matches for the next two weeks until 15 July 2024 in the larger interests of the Students and the glorious game of Rugby Football. 

This plea was made as SLSRFA released a press release after hosting a press conference on the 3rd of July. 

SLSRFA condemned the incident which took place on the 30th of June following the game between Science College and S. Thomas’ and expressed their unconditional apology to SLSRFR and the Match Officials who fell victim to the thuggish act by the notorious Science College spectators. 

The President wrote “SLSRFA express its unconditional apology to Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees (SLSRFR), and victimized Match Officials in particular, on this unfortunate incident, and assure that all measures will be taken to ensure that such incidents shall not be repeated in the future.” 

He also went on to assure the Referees of their safety as it was done prior to the beginning of the season as well. “Prior to the commencement of the Tournament, SLSRFA ensured the safety and security of players, match officials and spectators by giving foremost priority in consultation with all Stakeholders in respect of Tournament Rules, Technical, Discipline and Security. According to tournament rules, the host school bears complete responsibility to ensure the safety and security at the Match Venue.” 

The press release also went on to mention the fact that they (SLSRFA) implemented numerous measures to augment the quality and safety of the Schools Rugby League 2024 by organizing training programs for masters-in-charge, team captains, coaches, medics, referees, and match commissioners for all the 84 participating schools. At these trainings all schools were instructed to appoint a Security Liaison Officer. 

He went on to conclude by requesting the referees to reconsider their decision to abstain from officiating matches for the next two weeks until 15 July 2024 in the larger interests of the Students and the glorious game of Rugby Football.
