The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) sent an U20 national team to compete in the Asian sevens tournament for the first time last year.
This year too the SLRFU is keen on sending the junior team to Malaysia (30th & 31st July) and Hong Kong (12th & 13th August) 2016, for the Asia U20 sevens series.
SLRFU will conduct a sevens tournament on the 16th & 17th of July in Colombo and the venue will be informed soon. This tournament will serve as the official selection campaign for the Sevens series.
All the clubs, provinces, schools, and others registered as rugby bodies can participate in this tournament by contacting Mr.Imran at the SLRFU (M)0714812218 or [email protected] The closing date for the applications will be the 30th of June 2016.
To be eligible to participate, players should be born between 1st January 1996 and 31st December 1999. Players born between 01.01.1999 – 31.12.1999 must complete the World Rugby eligibility form.
In this regard most of the players who played and toured last year also can participate in this competition. Last year this inaugural tournament was won by the Isipathana College under the leadership of Omalka Gunarathne.
Speaking to ThePapare.com Mr. Rohan Gunarathne, the executive director of SLRFU, said that Sevens Rugby is the immediate way forward and as it is now an Olympic sport, the SLRFU will work hard with the growing talent to achieve future success.
Teams who participated last year included Agoal Rugby Academy, Isipathana, Science Maroons, Old Mudalians, SJC Cavaliers, Kadurata, Harfa Rugby Academy. This year SLRFU expects more teams to take part as this tournament will commence soon after the end of the President’s Trophy finals.
