The twelve 5th week matches of the SLC Major League Tournament 2022 concluded today (18th September) as 4 matches produced results.
SSC climbed up to the second spot of Group A with their 113-run over BRC today. After declaring their second innings on 203/8 setting the home team BRC a target of 364, the SSC left-arm-spin duo of Prabath Jayasuriya and Nimnaka Jayathilaka bundled out the opponents for 250 runs sharing 9 wickets among them. Test cap Jayasuriya completed a match bag of 11 wickets to set up a clinical win for the SSC boys. For BRC, skipper Tillakaratne Sampath’s 7 wickets in the second innings and all-rounder Dushan Hemantha’s unbeaten 103 in just 75 balls in the fourth innings stood out.
The other win of Group A was recorded by Galle CC as their Indian leg-spinner Raghu Sharma guided them for a comfortable win by an innings and 13 runs against Kalutara TC. Sharma who enjoyed bowling on the Galle track claimed 11 wickets in the match. This is Sharma’s second match-bag of more than 10 wickets in this tournament.
At Moors Grounds, the home team escaped defeat thanks to some late resistance shown by the lower middle order and the tail. Chasing 304 in the fourth innings they managed to end the day on 241 for 8 denying CCC a deserving victory. Early in the day, Moors skipper Ramesh Mendis grabbed 6 wickets to restrict the CCC second innings for 269. Later in the day, for CCC, Sonal Dinusha recorded his career-best bowling figures in a match as he claimed 3-second innings wickets to go with his 8 in the first innings.
Playing in a domestic first-class game after a while, Sri Lanka’s highest-ranked T20I allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga enjoyed a good outing with CCC scoring a 46-ball 56 and claiming 4 wickets in the second innings.
Police SC recorded a much-needed first innings win over Ragama CC as they scored a massive 460/6d for their first innings in reply to Ragama’s 400. Opener Heshan Dhanushka scored 233 for the cops recording the third highest individual score of the tournament so far. Batting in their second innings, Ragama opener debutant Yohan Liyanage scored his maiden first-class ton while in-form batter Nishan Madushka scored 81, which is his 8th consecutive 50+ score in all formats and 7th consecutive in first-class cricket.
In more individual brilliance in Group A this week, Colts CC’s Hashan Dumindu scored an unbeaten 138 against Lankan CC while Sebastianites C & AC’s ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Ratnayake recorded his second 10+ match bag in the tournament claiming 10 wickets against Kurunegala Youth CC.

In Group B also 2 games produced results. In Moratuwa, Navy SC recorded their first win of the tournament defeating Nugegoda S & WC by 106 runs after conceding a first innings lead. The fightback was first lead by opener Adeesha Nanayakkara who guided them towards 302/9d in the second innings with a 96 alongside valuable knocks from Madura Madushanka and Malinga Maligaspe. Nanayakkara had scored 93 in the first innings too making his 90 odd in the second innings the second instance where he fell short of a deserving 100 in the same game. The target of 240 for Nugegoda in the fourth innings seemed daunting task as the left-arm spin of Navin Kavikara claimed another 6-wicket haul for Navy. Kavikara ended the game with a complete haul of 12 wickets.
Tamil Union C & AC maintained their lead in Group B with yet another win. This win against Saracens SC is their third win of the tournament.
The NCC-Negombo CC game in Katunayake was another run-fest as NCC recorded a first innings win thanks to Sahan Arachchige’s knock of 110 on day 3 following Sandun Weerakkody’s 150 on the previous day. Negombo’s veteran spinner Upul Indrasiri claimed 5 wickets while NCC’s main strike bowler Sri Lanka Test cap Lasith Embuldeniya completed a match bag of 10 wickets including a 6-wicket haul in the second innings.
Raveen Yasas of Chilaw Marians CC and Pakistani Zahid Mansoor of Badureliya SC recorded tons against Ace Capital CC and Army SC respectively while Air Force SC’s spinner Dulanjana Mendis bagged 5 wickets against Panadura SC.
